The Cannes Film Festival originated in 1932 when the then French Minister of Education, Jean Zay, at the suggestion of Philippe Erlanger and with American and British help, organized the first French International Film Festival. Since 1947, the festival has been called "Festival du film de Cannes". Since then the venue of the festival has remained the same, the city of Cannes on the French Riviera.
